Toyota Tundra & Tacoma Truck Recalls
On September 9, 2009, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalled almost four million Toyota and Lexus vehicles because of unexpected acceleration caused by faulty floor mats that can become stuck under accelerator pedals. This included a Tacoma floor mat recall for models from 2005-2010 and a Tundra floor mat recall for models from 20007-2010. At the time of the recall, the floor mat defect was suspected to be the cause of a recent fatal accident, and the NHTSA suggested that owners of these and other Toyota vehicles immediately remove the floor mats.
The recent Toyota recalls for cars such as the Prius and Avalon, production cuts, and sales cessations are all signs of these serious problems. Although Toyota began addressing the issue in early 2010 by having dealers temporarily shorten the pedals—with replacement pedals becoming available in April of that year to permanently address the Tundra and Tacoma gas pedal recall—the risk of accident can still exist today for owners unaware of the problems.
